Research
Soham Saha has an impressive background in electrical engineering. As a student, she co-founded a Purdue student chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society and served as its president. She also organized the 2018 IONS Midwest Conference, which drew nearly 200 participants from 5 countries. In addition, she initiated dozens of undergraduate research projects, including a Women in Optics and Nanoscience Symposium. Now, she hopes to continue her academic career in optics, unlocking novel physical phenomena with robust materials and developing devices for high-impact applications.
After completing her PhD, Soham Saha received the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award for the Fall of 2021. Her winning submission was titled “Engineering the Optical Properties of Conducting Oxides and Nitrides for Optically Switchable Metasurfaces.” Soham Saha is studying extreme light behavior in metals and oxides. She is collaborating with the Technion in Israel and the University of Ottawa in Canada.
Publications
Soham Saha has published in several prestigious journals. His work has won him several awards, including the Society of Vacuum Coaters Foundation Scholarship and SPIE Education Scholarship, which recognizes a student’s potential to make a contribution to the field of Optics and Photonics. In addition, he has initiated the Undergraduate Research in Optics (URO) program at Purdue University and organized the Women in Optics and Nanoscience Symposium. He plans to continue his research in an academic setting, unlocking new physical phenomena and developing devices for high-impact applications.
Despite being a scientist by profession, Soham Saha has been writing science fiction since his undergraduate days. His work has appeared in science fiction anthologies in the USA. In the future, he hopes to bring attention to Bengali literature across the globe. He is currently translating Bengali fairy tales into English and is working with researchers at the Technion, Israel and the University of Ottawa. Soham’s publications today include:
upcoming projects
In addition to his current projects, Saha has already been honored with several awards. In 2017, he was the president of the Purdue University SPIE student chapter and the founder of the Purdue IEEE Photonics Society student chapter. In 2018, he organized the first Midwest Conference on Optics and Photonics (IONS Midwest), which was attended by more than 200 students from five countries. He also initiated the Undergraduate Research in Optics program and mentored dozens of undergraduates for their research. Additionally, he initiated the Purdue University Women in Optics and Nanoscience Symposium. He plans to continue pursuing a career in optics as an academic researcher, aiming to unlock new physical phenomena and develop devices with high-impact applications.
In January, Soham Saha received the Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation PhD award for 2021, a highly competitive award that will earn him his doctorate in the Fall of 2021. His thesis project was titled, Engineering the Optical Properties of Conducting Oxides and Nitrides for Optically Switchable Metasurfaces. Soham Saha will use his PhD to explore the behavior of extreme light in metals and oxides. He is working with the Technion in Israel and the University of Ottawa.
